DESCRIPTION:
Supplied in powder or granular type of SODIUM HYDROXIDE
(NA OH).
APPLICATION:
CAUSTIC SODA is used mostly in water base muds to increase
pH and thereby increase the efficiency of organic products (thinners
and fluid loss additives). It also tends to increase the yield of
clay, avoid fermentation of drilling starches and minimize corrosion
rate by providing on alkaline medium. CAUSTIC SODA when added to
the mud will reduce total hardness due to the precipitation of magnesium
ions as per the following chemical equation:
Mg++ + 2NaoH
→ Mg
(oH)2 + 2Na+
PACKAGING:
CAUSTIC SODA is packaged in 25 kg polyethylene bags.
HAZARD:
CAUSTIC SODA is a strong alkaline. Caution should be taken
when handling as it causes severe burns if allowed to get on the
skin especially if it is wet. Skin burns should be washed immediately
and thoroughly flushed with water for approximately 15 minutes.
The application of a burn ointment is helpful to ease the pain.
Washing with water for 15 minutes is recommended for eye burns as
a first-aid treatment; if the burn is severe a physician should
be consulted immediately.
