LUBRICANTS, EMULSIFIERS AND SURFACTANTS

GLYCOL

DESCRIPTION:
GLYCOL is a completely water-soluble synthetic polymer, which absorbs strongly at the surface of troublesome swelling shales forming a water-repellent barrier. Excellent inhibition is observed in the presence of potassium ions and these are recommended for optimum performance.

APPLICATION:
GLYCOL based mud additives were developed in response to the need for enchanced performance water based mud systems. The use of GLYCOL enables water based mud usage in areas where oil based mud systems were previously the only option. A large research program identified the products as being the most technically suitable on the basis of the following properties:-

* Environmental assessment.
* Ability to inhibit shale dispersion and reduce swelling.
* Effect on shale hardness.
* Effect on lubricity.
* Effect on fluid loss.
* Effect on whole mud performance e.g. polymer compatibility, rheology, etc.
* Effect on formation damage potential.

CLOUD POINT OF GLYCOL BASED MUD ADDITIVIES:
Cloud point refers to the property of “inverse solubility” of the GLYCOL based mud additives when in solution i.e. they are water soluble at ambient temperatures but become less soluble at elevated temperatures. A micro emulsion is formed and the benefit is seen in enhanced mud properties such as reduced fluid loss. The cloud point behavior is dependent on additive type and molecular structure as well as the temperature and salinity of the drilling fluid.

FORMATION DAMAGE POTENTIAL:
GLYCOL additives have been evaluated in formation damage experiments. They are found to be effectively non-damaging.

PACKAGING:
Available in 210 liter drums.

HAZARDS:
GLYCOL irritation to eye and skin if contacted.
